Voices and Choices Charity – Better Connected

Elderly daughter visiting his disabled mother at home

Voices and Choices is a charity based in the centre of Chesham.  We have a group of wonderful volunteers who deliver advocacy, information and support to both elderly people and those living with a disability to help empower them to make their own decisions and live safe and sound at home.  Our free of charge service is available throughout the Chilterns area.

With families increasingly becoming more distant from each other we can offer relatives the comfort that their loved ones are in safe hands.  The way our volunteers provide support is very varied; it can be something as simple as finding someone to help in the garden, or to walk a pet, to setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney or supporting our client in making complaints, or attending medical appointments as an extra pair of ears.  We can also help to signpost people to the other services they need.

Covid 19 did mark a slow-down of our services due to the need for us to visit clients in their own homes to discuss their situation.  Some of our volunteers were also shielding.  However, with the easing of lockdown our volunteers can continue to meet people at a social distance.  We are also delighted to have recruited a group of enthusiastic new volunteers who have enjoyed their experience of volunteering during the crisis and wish to continue giving back to their community.  We are definitely ‘open for business’ again.

We are also very excited to be launching a new project called Better Connected.  This project hopes to tackle the hidden issue of loneliness and social isolation.  Our volunteers will be carefully matched with someone who wishes to re-establish connections into wider society.  The volunteer will visit and take time to understand the needs and interests of that person, with the aim to introducing them to local groups which cater for those individual interests.  Our volunteers can then accompany their client to groups until they are comfortable that they have made friends and wish to continue on their own.
