Cleaning the war memorial – written by Uncle Phil

At the beginning of 2020 Paul Isom, local town council parks manager, emailed to ask if I could get together some volunteers to help clean the town’s war memorial. Pam, who is an expert in cleaning memorials and lives in the town had thought our memorial was in need of cleaning. Soon after, coronavirus took hold and the country went into Lockdown, so it wasn’t until the second week of October before we started. Pam Wignall gave us instructions outside Caffe Nero. Pam only needed 4 volunteers so I, Cllr. Mo Fayyaz, Phil Harrison and David Bird listened carefully as Pam explained what cleaning material she was using and why Portland Stone had to be cleaned in a certain way. The council workers put up the scaffolding, Pam and Phil H had the main task of cleaning the soldier and plinth, the rest of us cleaned the surrounds.  We worked from 09.00-2.30 for three successive Thursdays taking us into the second Lockdown on November 5th. Pam and Phil H finished it off, in time for Remembrance Sunday on the 8th November.
